| A Letter to Gaius | A Letter to Gaius (3 John) John, the elder, writes to Gaius, his good friend in the truth, with a prayer for health, that all things may go well. He is joyful of the news he heard of Gaius’ faithfulness, that he’s walking in the truth where blessings dwell. He works for Christian brothers, though strangers in the flesh, who spread the word of God both far and near. His hospitality has been noticed by the church, that all who preach the truth are welcome here. You will do well, John tells him, to send them on their way in a manner that is worthy of the Lord, with love and food and lodging -whatever they may need - to offer them the best you can afford. We all should work together so that the truth abounds, unlike Diotrephes, who would be first. He has naught to do with us and spreads malicious gossip, refuses to welcome brothers in the church. Do not imitate what is evil, but cling to what is good. Anyone who does good is a child of God. If anyone does evil, God does not dwell within, and at judgement will not give a welcome nod. Demetrius is spoken of quite well by everyone, and even by the truth that he obeys. We apostles all speak well of him, and we only speak the truth; he’s an asset to the church in all his ways. I have much to say to you, but not with pen and ink; I hope that soon we can talk face to face. The friends here send their greetings; greet the friends there all by name. Peace to you, he writes, with an attitude of grace. To contact me: cgtrent@att.net |
